Equipment
Before each fight you choose which items to use. Only those items count, and only those items can take Damage.
Loadout limits
In one encounter you may use at most:
| Slot | Limit | Counts toward |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | 1 | Attack |
| Shield | 1, and only if your weapon is one-handed | Defence |
| Armour (body armour) | 1 | Defence |
| Amulet | 1 | Attack or Defence (your choice) |
| Ring | 2 | Attack or Defence (your choice, per ring) |
You don’t have to fill every slot. Fight with whatever subset of your items you like.
Where Attack and Defence come from
- Attack is the total of the symbols on your weapon, plus any jewellery you assign to Attack.
- Defence is the total of the symbols on your armour and shield, plus any jewellery you assign to Defence.
A weapon has no hidden base damage. Its Attack is exactly the symbols printed on it, including any symbols added by modifiers. A Shortsword (one Sword) gives one symbol of Attack. A Corroded Longsword (two Swords) gives two.
Jewellery: all or nothing
You assign each amulet and each ring to either Attack or Defence. All of that piece’s symbols go to the side you chose. You can’t split one amulet between Attack and Defence. Different pieces can go to different sides. For example, one ring can count toward Attack while the other counts toward Defence.
Two-handed weapons
A two-handed weapon takes up the shield slot as well, so you lose the shield’s Defence. In exchange, two-handers tend to carry more symbols. See how to tell a two-hander from the card’s slot icons.
Damaged items
Items lose durability when you win a fight (details). Once an item has taken two Damage, it can no longer be used. Players’ main advice is to keep cards in reserve and not spend durability on fights you don’t need.
The starter pack
You get your starter pack in your swag bag at badge pickup. It holds a card box with quests printed on the back, the rules leaflet, a Quick Reference card and your first item cards.
Starter packs are not identical. Players compared their packs on 6 November 2026 and reported:
- Six item cards per pack.
- A common pattern: a Shortsword, a Corroded Longsword, a Splintered Tower Shield and a Rusted Cuirass, plus a couple of other items.
- Magic or rare items seem to randomly replace a normal item, so a rare weapon could take the place of your only body armour.
- Most people got about one magic item. Some got all normal items, and a few got several rares.
Treat these as observations, not rules. The pack contents haven’t been officially published.
